Carson is an embittered and isolated rancher on the Texas border, haunted by the tragic death of his wife years earlier. When a group of migrants crosses his property, he shoots into the dark, only to discover the next day that he has gravely wounded a pregnant young migrant girl, Irena. Confronted with his actions and threatened by a criminal investigation, Carter reluctantly allows Irena to recuperate on the ranch. Respect develops, then friendship. Ultimately, Carter agrees to transport Irena to family in the US – all while pursued by his son, Harley, an agent for the US Border Patrol.
